52 Weeks: #17 Simon Says

Week 17 Simon Says

My son recently learned how to play “Simon Says” at school and he thinks it is a great game because he now gets to be the BOSS. Playing the game gives him the authority to tell us what to do and how to do it; what 4 year old would not love that? He fully does not grasp the concept that we are out of the game if we do an action sans the “Simon Says” command. He gets irritated when says a command and we do not do it.

To embrace his new authority, we develop a Simon Says stroller game. In the stroller game, there is no “out” per se, but an opportunity to encourage good listening skills and self control. Perhaps for both you as the parent and your children.

Target Age Group: 3-5 years old (children must be follow basic instructions)

How to Play:

  1. Allow your child to be Simon first.
  2. Explain the rules again that, mommy and daddy cannot do the command unless it proceeded by the words, “Simon says.”
  3. Have them beginning issuing commands sometimes saying ‘Simon says,” and sometimes not. Here are some examples of commands.
  • Run until I count to 5.
  • Make a funny face.
  • Do jumping jacks.
  • Run around the stroller once.
  • Run as fast as you can to the light.
  • Laugh.
  • Sing “Let it go” from the Disney Movie Frozen.
  • Sing a silly song.
  • Reach to the sky.
  • Stretch your arms and legs out.
  • Touch the top of your head.
  • Make a monkey sound.
  • Whistle.
  • Blow kisses.

Warning: This game produces a lot of laughter and a lot of stares.
